Yet, independently of the networking made possible by digital tools (forums, blogs etc.) and our electronically interconnected world, the reality can be quite different. Some translators, especially those involved in the theatre, opt for the adventure of collective translation, either for economic reasons or as part of a teaching project. This may be a one-off, contingent experience, but can lead to the creation of more or less permanent translation collectives, which outlive their original purpose, as is the case with two French examples: Hermaion and the collective La langue du bourricot.

The papers published in this issue will deal with the following questions:

motivations : why translate together ? Is it simply making a virtue out of necessity?

ways and means: how does one translate with another person, or indeed several others? What specific working methods or translation briefs are required? What is the difference between a collective translation and a collaborative one?

obstacles and benefits : is it always a case of mutual enrichment, of shared understanding and intersubjective sensitivity when each individual is adding his or her personal piece to the jigsaw?

We may also wonder whether this increasingly widespread phenomenon, beyond its economic motivations, is part of a trend arising from the development of social networks, of participatory democracy, reflecting the desire or the opportunity given to pool resources and enhance human interrelations in this collective pursuit of joyful knowledge-sharing.

Proposals for papers on collective theatrical translations should be submitted to Antonella Capra (antocapra@yahoo.fr) and Catherine Mazellier-Lajarrige (catherine.mazellier@univ-tlse2.fr) before 15 September 2015.
