At the foot of the hill lie the ruins of the ancient city of Lugdunum Convenarum and other Gallo-Roman remains. The city was founded as Roman colony by Pompey on his way back from Spain in 72 BC. The term Comminges itself comes probably from the Latin word Convenae, meaning ‘who came together’ at Pompey’s new settlement. The temple, built in marble of the Pyrenees, was probably dedicated to the worship of Rome and the emperor. The forum, articulated on a vast portico courtyard, represented the economic heart of the city and politics: it was surrounded by a covered passage with shops. Nearby, there were baths with an outdoor pool as well as pools of warm and cold water. Almost nothing remains from the theater, which leaned against the hill. An original Christian basilica preserves some sarcophagi.

Renaissance-style houses surround the upper town—a true spiritual summitsymbolized by theSt. Mary’s Cathedral—, hold by a rampart carved in the roc.
